The concept of the common good is central to Catholic social thought because personhood is inherently interpersonal. But our society so emphasizes individuality and therefore breads intolerance that the message of the common good is in acute jeopardy.
John Carr, now of Georgetown, formerly with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, discusses the crisis of the common good with Matthew Dowd (who just withdrew as candidate for Texas Lt. Governor), Vincent Rougeau [newly invested as the first non-Jesuit President of Holy Cross College), Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), and sociologist of religion Tricia Bruce discuss the present moment and the threats to democracy.
I was impressed by Vincent Rougeau (the former Dean of Boston College Law School) and by the passion of Marcy Kaptur - the lonest serving female Member of the House of Representatives. - GWC
Whatever happened to the common good? Divided by Covid, Torn Apart by Politics, Fractured by Faith
