New York City enjoys the reputation as a bastion of liberal politics and progressive ideas. However, this has historically been misrepresented and to this day is a fallacy. When viewed through the lens of the struggle for racial justice and human rights, New York City too closely resembles a police state, with the Manhattan District Attorney’s office at the helm.
Black and Brown people know all too well the tight grip of the NYPD. From broken windows policing to stop-and-frisk, restrictions on freedom and outright abuses are far too common in the communities they are designed to target. And when the NYPD killed Eric Garner, Akai Gurley, Sean Bell, Amadou Diallo and many other Black people, calls for police reform looked to prosecutors in search for accountability, with little or no success.
