David Lat, founder of Above the Law @ATBlog, and once VP of the Yale Law School Federalist Society Chapter, has started a new substack newsletter he calls Original Jurisdiction. He urges the Society to somehow make amends for the Trump legacy. He proposes booting John Eastman of January 6 infamy, and says "[t]he Society should focus on its core mission of “sponsor[ing] fair, serious, and open debate” about important issues in the law — and stay away from all the politics."
Well, I guess so but the Society has actually been a cadre of Leninist discipline seeking to entrench values such as hostility to repairing the legacy of slavery and racism, undermining if not reversing the modern regulatory state, killing the Affordable Care Act, and apotheosizing the Second Amendment as a fundamental right to bear arms - which has helped continue the wave of suicides and mass shootings which are our unique contribution to contemporary culture. So if they actually want to welcome serious debate about those things, and can find progressives who are willing to engage those FedSoc arguments as good faith efforts, not ideological jeremiads, I guess that's OK. - GWC
