"We could have prevented 80-90% of the deaths" - UK Epidemiologist Devi Sridhar

Dr.  Devi Sridhar is an American epidemiologist and professor at Scotland's University of Edinburgh.

A new strain of the virus is barring travel from England to Europe as Brexit looms.  In this podcast she argues that an early, New Zealand type, lockdown could have cut covid deaths by 80-90%.  She observes that would also have eased the economic impact.

Looking back the first images to catch our attention are the emergency construction of isolation bed hospitals in Wuhan - to stop human to human transmission in households.  There was a lot of American tut, tut, tut about how we are free and they are a dictatorship.  Well they are free to go to work and ride the trains now and we are isolating for Christmas as the post-Thanksgiving surge kills 3,000 a day and infects 200,000 daily.

America's incompetence is the most dramatic proof yet of our flawed culture and our failing governmental structure.  The politics of resentment proved so powerful that Donald Trump gained 74 million votes.  True he lost by seven million, but the margin was a hair's breadth if you look at the Electoral College which privileges rural and small states.  The anti-abortion flag licensed Catholics and Evangelicals to commit the sin of endorsing the first openly racist President since Woodrow Wilson.  And now, as the virus spreads like wildfire,  we have spectacle of the President ranting like Lear proclaiming that he won an election that he plainly lost.  - GWC
