Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson Commemorates 1963 Birmingham Church Bombing

On this day in 1963 a bomb exploded at the 16th Avenue Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. killing these four girls.

 


The Ku Klux Klan killed four young Black girls that morning.  Sixteen years passed before the first of the Klansmen Robert Chambliss was convicted.  Three more would be tried and convicted by a jury. Two more cases were tried in 2000 and 2001 by U.S. Attorney Doug Collins.  He later served a term as U.S. Senator for Alabama, until he stepped down in favor of football coach Tommy Tuberville.
