An irony of Clarence Thomas's life and career is that a beneficiary of affirmative action became its most bitter opponent.
I graduated from Holy Cross College a year before he started. The place was all white and all Catholic. Largely Irish Catholic. Every class began with a prayer.
So asde from being vaguely welcoming to the civil rights movement evern someone like may gave little thought to our racial makeup.
But as future HC President Jon Brooks saw it - there was a big gap between what we were and what we should be. He set out to recruit a first class of black students. He succeeded brilliantly as Diane Brady recounts in her excellent book about the effort - Fraternity.
