The Elite Circle Clarence Thomas Entered That Led to the Supreme Court - The New York Times

An irony of Clarence Thomas's life and career is that a beneficiary of affirmative action became its most bitter opponent.
I graduated from Holy Cross College a year before he started.  The place was all white and all Catholic.  Largely Irish Catholic. Every class began with a prayer.
So asde from being vaguely welcoming to the civil rights movement evern someone like may gave little thought to our racial makeup.
But as future HC President Jon Brooks saw it - there was a big gap between what we were and what we should be.  He set out to recruit a first class of black students.  He succeeded brilliantly as Diane Brady recounts in her excellent book about the effort - Fraternity.
