Does The Popular Vote Matter

Lot of bloody good it does us but...the electoral college is an artifact of the original deal - to protect the slave states from federal interference.  Indirect election of President and Senate were in the 1787 pact.
Post Civil War the southern states gained strength because the 13th Amendment voided the 3/5 rule.  With the defeat of Reconstruction by the segregationists white power grew because the southern states got credit for 5/5ths of the still disenfranchised African American population!  To counter this the Republican Party allowed the creation of a thinly populated mid-western states, giving each of them two U.S. Senators.  We are paying the price for that now.  - gwc
