A couple of years ago Bruce Green at Fordham organized a conference called `Dylan & the Law'. This is my favorite, with `Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts' running a close second. It is the original of Dylan's Knocking on Heaven's door - written for Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. "Momma take this badge off of me, I can't use it anymore", he sings after Garrett shoots the Kid in self defense, a grim necessity. J.J. Goldberg of The Forward puts it on the top of his Yom Kippur playlist.
