A brief history of the Japanese writing system
I was hoping that it would be a simpler, phonetic system that resulted. But according to this Skritter post it appears that three systems are used (Kanji, Katakana, and Hiragana). The Chinese derived characters persist - there are 2,000 - 3,000 in common use. - gwc
