Gun Periscopic:U.S. Gun murders in 2010

003
9,595  click on the number for a dynamic graphic and here for an epidemiologic analysis of murder victims nationwide in 2010.
Who are they according to the FBI Uniform Crime Report?
Mostly young, mostly Black, overwhelmingly male, and mostly killed by handguns -  the very weapons the U.S. Supreme Court  has declared there is a personal constitutional right to possess under the Second Amendment (part of the Bill of Rights) which - if you read it - protects states' rights to maintain a militia in the new constitutional order ratified in 1789 by the votes of white men.

69% OF THESE VICTIMS WERE KILLED WITH A HANDGUN

According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports (UCR), 69% of all gun killings in 2010 were committed with a handgun. This figure is especially poignant as we debate the effect of banning assault rifles. While banning high-capacity magazines would affect the number of bullets loaded into a semi-automatic handgun, this and other proposed gun policies would have no direct affect on the availability of killers’ weapon of choice—the handgun.

57% OF GUN KILLING VICTIMS WERE BLACK

While black people accounted for 13.6% of the U.S. population in 2010, they made up over half of the gun victims. In contrast, white people made up 78.1% of the total population, but 41% of the victims. The burden of gun violence falls disproportionately upon the black population of America.

58% OF THOSE KILLED WERE 30 OR YOUNGER

In 2010, 5,597 people (58% of the victims) were killed at or before the age of 30. The average American lives to the age of 78, so that’s at least 48 years of life un-lived by the average gun victim. 1,091 people (11%) were killed at or under the age of 18—not even adults. Killed before such milestones as marriage, children, grandchildren, or a career, 58% of the people killed with a gun had barely begun to live their lives.

85% OF GUN KILLING VICTIMS WERE MALE

It has been argued that stricter gun control would reduce violent crimes against women. At 85% of the total victims, 8,140 men were killed with a gun in 2010. Although violent crimes against women are an important and international issue, this data reflects another very important, but less widely recognized public health issue-the risk to men of violent gun crime.
