The United States management of the coronavirus pandemic is in the doomed to fair region. Doomed because we already are eight months into the crisis with utterly failed leadership and are in the midst of a huge surge. That is damage done. As in fighting fire we need a firebreak to set up a perimeter with pumpers. The coming vaccines and competent leadership (Biden COS Ron Klain is precisely right for the job) are the pumpers. But the prospect even then is only fair because o ordinary human impatience - to see family, go out to eat, be social - is complicated by the peculiar culture of our individualistic social ethic. And, Yes, that means particularly people who vote Republican. That's Why they vote Republican - they think - like my musical idol Van Morrison - that social responsibility is tyranny. And facts will not e permitted t get in the way. - GWC
