America - Jesuit weekly faults bishops' conference on health care reform bill
Technicalities and hypotheticals weighed more than health care for all in the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops analysis leading them to oppose passage of the health care reform bill last month, say the editors of America, the Jesuit weekly magazine in an editorial HERE. Thanks to ReligiousLefltlaw blog. Fortunately Catholic legislators gave more weight to facts as did the nuns whose support was important to passage.

While better than nothing, this editorial fails to impress. Until American Jesuits support same sex marriages (and the Jesuits at Fordham University authorizes health benefits for same sex partners), come out in favor of women as priests, and take a genuine lead in bringing the Church and Vatican to account for child abuse, they will remain far closer to the bishops whom in this instance they criticize than to genuine progressives.
