Why Students Do Better Overseas - NYTimes.com

They have high standards - and they provide support for those who for reasons of disability, etc. cannot meet them.  They respect and support teachers, rather than blame them.  Teacher training is at their strong universities, not relegated to second rate training schools.They do not have decentralized, locally taxed educational systems.  They have national systems with clear and high objectives.  Take a look at the Finnish standards for secondary schools - and weep.
