PPP Poll: Democrat Leads LePage In Maine Gov. Race

The problem here is the wild-card independent.  Mainers will vote that way and elect reasonable people - like Sen. Angus King - a former Governor.  Appeals to their Yankee something or other.  But in 2010 it was Cutler (whom my usual hero James Fallows lauds) who polled a strong second! that got us LePage - a Tea Party sort with a Chris Christie mouth.  Since Mike Michaud is a popular (now openly gay) Congressman in what should be a Democratic year, one has to hope that Democrat-inclined independents will conclude this is not the year to wave that flag.  Elliot Cutler is a reasonable guy - but once the "I wanna be..." bug bites he like other candidates probably won't back down even if Michaud's numbers hold up.  - GWC
PPP Poll: Democrat Leads LePage In Maine Gov. Race:

Rep. Mike Michaud (D-ME) leads Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) in the Maine governor's race according to a new Public Policy Polling survey released Tuesday.

The PPP poll found Michaud leading LePage 38 percent to 36 percent while Independent candidate Eliot Cutler has 15 percent of those surveyed. Meanwhile 10 percent said they were undecided.

In a head-to-head matchup Michaud leads LePage 53 percent to 39 percent.

The poll's findings come after Michaud made headlines for coming out as gay. The poll found that three-quarters of those surveyed view Michaud the same as they did before he came out.
